Everton (The Blues) History

  • 1878 – the club was formed and the first name was St. Domingo F.C.
  • November, 1879 – St. Domingo F.C. became Everton F.C. at a meeting in the Queen’s Head Hotel.
  • December 20, 1879 – took place the first match of the team against St Peter’s at Stanley Park. The result of the game was a 6-0 victory of Everton.
  • 18821883 – Everton reached the final of the new Liverpool Cup, but they were defeated by Bootle in the Final. The club moved to a field at Priory Road.
  • October, 1887 – the Toffees lost 0-1at Bolton in the 1st Round of the FA Cup.
  • 1888 – Everton became a founder member of the Football League.
  • September 8, 1888 – took place the first match against Accrington Stanley. The Toffeemen won this game with a score 2-1.
  • 18891890 – the club became a runners-up of the First Division.
  • August 24, 1892 – the team moved to Goodison Park.
  • September 3, 1892 – took place the the first League match against Nottingham Forest. As a result – a 2-2 draw.
  • March 26, 1893 - Everton were defeated 1-0 by Wolverhampton Wanderers at Fallowfield Stadium losing FA Cup final.
  • April 10, 1897 – the club lost 3-2 to Aston Villa at Crystal Palace. It was the second defeat at the final game of the FA Cup.
  • April, 1906 – eventually, Everton won the FA Cup, beating Newcastle United at Crystal Palace.
  • April 20, 1907 - in the FA Cup final the team was defeated 2-1 by Sheffield Wednesday.
  • 19141915 – 36 goals in 35 matches and Everton became Division One winners.
  • 1925 - 1926 – the first season of William Ralph Dean in the club. He scored 32 league goals in 38 games. Than “Dixie” Dean scored 21 goals in 27 matches.
  • 19271928 – was Dean’s record: 60 league goals in 39 matches. This brought to Everton the league title.
  • 1930 -1931 – the team was relegated to the Second Division, but the Toffees became champions of the Second Division from the first attempt and got the promotion due to Dean’s 39 goals in 37 games.
  • 19311932 – William Ralph Dean scored 45 goals and Everton regained the First Division title.
  • 1933 – the FA Cup success. They won the trophy, defeating Manchester City 3-0 at Wembley.
  • December 11, 1937 – Dean played his last match for Everton. For his career at the club he scored 383 goals in 433 matches.
  • January, 1937 – Tommy Lawton joined the club.
  • 19381939 – Lawton scored 34 goals in 38 matches and Everton won the First Division.
  • 19501951 – after the Second World War the Toffees were relegated to the Second Division for the second time.
  • 1953 - 1954 – they finished runners-up, beating Oldham away 4-0 and were promoted to the First Division.
  • 19611962 - Harry Catterick was appointed manager. Everton finished in the 4th place in Division One.
  • 1962 - 1963 – the club became champions of the First Division. Roy Vernon and Alex Young scored 46 goals.
  • 1966 – Sunderland, Bedford Town, Coventry City, and the two Manchester clubs were beaten and Everton became the holder of FA Cup title.
  • 1969 -1970 – the club won the Championship again.
  • 1973 - after poor results Harry Catterick was dismissed and Billy Bingham was brought in.
  • 1974 -1975 – the Toffees finished in 4th place.
  • 1977 - the team reached the League Cup final, but lost in extra time of the second replay. Gordon Lee took over a post of manager. Bob Latchford scored 30 league goals. Everton finished third.
  • 1978 -1979 – the club reached fourth place.
  • 1981 – Howard Kendall appointed as manager. Such players as: Neville Southall, Gary Stevens, Trevor Steven, Kevin Sheedy, Andy Gray and Peter Reid were in the squad of the team. Gary Lineker scored 40 goals.
  • 1984 - 1985 – during this season Everton won the FA Cup and became the League champions.
  • 1985 – Everton won the European Cup Winners’ Cup and became the FA Cup runners-up.
  • 1986 – the club won the First Division, but lost to Manchester United in the FA Cup final.
  • 1987 – Colin Harvey took over a post of manager.
  • 1989 – the team reached the FA Cup final, but they lost to Liverpool again.
  • 1990 – Howard Kendall returned as a manager. In 1994 he was replaced with Mike Walker. He made several expensive new signings and a part of hard work.
  • 1994 -1995 - Mike Walker was dismissed after a dreadful season and Joe Royle was brought in.
  • 1995 – under Joe Royle the club got a 2-0 victory over Liverpool and won the FA Cup for the fifth time, beating Manchester United 1-0 in the final. The club finished 6th.
  • 1996 -1997 - wasn’t successful – the team reached only 15th place.
  • 19971998 – Howard Kendall returned for a third time. The club won just 9 of their 38 league matches. Howard Kendall was replaced with Walter Smith. The first his season of charge the club finished 14th than 13th and eventually 16th.
  • March, 2002 – the club was under the danger of relegation. David Moyes took the managerial reigns.
  • 20022003 – Wayne Rooney became the youngest ever player to play for England and the youngest England goalscorer, who opened his Premiership account at the age of 16 and made his England debut at 17.
  • 20032004 – the team finished in 17th place. According to the points it was the lowest points total in the club’s history.
  • August, 2004 – Rooney was sold to Manchester United for a fee of £23million.
  • 20052006 – Villarreal beat Everton 4-2 on aggregate at the start of the season. It brought the team an 11th place.
  • 20062007 – a 2-0 away win at Tottenham was the first first league win at White Hart Lane in twenty years. Andrew Johnson was signed from Crystal Palace. He scored 6 goals in 7 matches. The club finished 6th.
  • 20072008 - Everton signed new players, among them were: Phil Jagielka from Sheffield United, Leighton Baines from Wigan Athletic and Steven Pienaar from Borussia Dortmund. Yakubu Aiyegbeni was also brought in for a record fee of 11.25 million pounds. By November Everton won 6 games from 7. Tim Cahill scored 6 goals in his first 6 games and Yakubu also scored 6 goals.
